Ocean City Today: Bodacious Buckets Opens
Uptown shop features frozen custard served in buckets
The summer of 2010 has been one for the record books, with the fifth heat wave of the season upon us. So, what better way to beat the heat than with a frozen treat? How about frozen custard?
Karen and John Booze recently opened Bodacious Buckets in the Montego Bay Shopping Center on 129th Street in Ocean City, where they serve frozen custard, a dessert that resembles soft serve ice cream but has a different, slower, churning process. Frozen custard is denser, richer, thicker, smoother and creamier, Karen Booze said.
“People here equate frozen custard with soft serve ice cream, and it’s not. Frozen custard contains butterfat and egg yoke,” she said. “Many people are not educated in what frozen custard is, but once they taste it, they love it. When you bite into it, the palate tastes the product better than it would taste ice cream. It is served 18 to 20 degrees warmer, which allows for maximum flavor.”
Booze said she and her husband visit two frozen custard stands near their home in Virginia and they love the product. The couple, who own a resort property, planned to move to Ocean City after they retired, and thought a frozen custard shop would be perfect for the resort town.
Booze retired from IBM after 30 years, while her husband currently works for an IT company in northern Virginia.
Bodacious Buckets opened July 2, and has developed quite a following. Booze said the shop has a good amount repeat business, especially from people living in the nearby communities. Evenings have been the busiest time of day, Booze said, as customers come in looking for an after-dinner treat.
“It’s been going well,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
The frozen custard is prepared fresh daily at Bodacious Buckets. Vanilla and chocolate are always available. Each day a special flavor, concocted by Booze, is also offered. A monthly calendar is posted in the shop to inform customers of the daily featured flavor. According to the calendar, today’s (Aug. 6) featured flavor is pineapple coconut. Cherry Vanilla is on the menu for Saturday and Raspberry is the custom blend on Sunday. Other flavors available during the month of August include mango, almond toffee, orange creamcicle, cookies and cream, rum raisin and banana.
“ [Frozen custard] has a cult following,” Booze said. “People who come in have said ‘This is real frozen custard.’”
Customers can get their frozen custard in cake, sugar or waffle cones, in a cup, between two cookies or on top of a brownie. To satisfy a big appetite, it is also available in a big bucket and served with a shovel.
Toppings to choose from include gummy bears and worms, sprinkles, Nerds, mini M&Ms, crushed Oreos, chocolate chips, peanuts, chopped peanut butter cups, Reese’s Pieces, hot fudge, marshmallow, pineapple, strawberries, wet walnuts, chocolate syrup and caramel.
Floats and iced coffee are also offered.
Bodacious Buckets is open daily from noon until 11 p.m.
